Help more people understand why Universal Credit needs to change

13th July 2026

QUIZ: How much is the basic rate of Universal Credit per week?

A) £260
B) £200
C) £180
D) £98

The answer might surprise you… it’s D: just £98 a week.

Many people don’t know that Universal Credit isn’t based on the real cost of essentials – like food, bills, rent or transport – and there’s no independent process to check whether it’s enough to live on.

We see the impact every day: people being pushed into hardship and through the doors of food banks like ours.

This must change. And we need your help!

Here are 3 simple ways you can take action today:

1️⃣ Email your MP – head to this link for a step-by-step guide and a template email you can copy, personalise and send in less than 5 minutes!

2️⃣ Share this blog post – help more people understand why Universal Credit needs to change.

3️⃣ Encourage others to join in – ask your friends, family and community to email their MP too.

Every email counts more than you might think! Your voice carries weight, and by speaking up together, we can build the momentum needed to create a fairer system for all of us. 🤝🗳️
